OHS | PI/SG General Information

New button
Recently, the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I) issued a policy change that took effect 7/1/09 (link to policy).  This change does not affect our policy regarding the receipt of BCI/FBI results; it remains the responsibility of the provider to get the BCI/FBI to the PI/SG Unit.

In order to help you achieve this in the most efficient manner possible, we have worked with BCI&I to establish a ‘direct copy’ mailing feature to PI/SG.  This delivery address section is different than the ‘mail to’ address in that the PI/SG Unit will receive electronic results, possibly as soon as 3 days after the web check has been completed.

Effective 7/1/09, this will be the acceptable method of transmission.  Ask the WebCheck facility to check the ‘direct copy’ box and select “Ohio Department of Public Safety/PISG.”

Entering an address in the ‘mail to’ field allows the provider to receive a duplicate paper copy of the result.  If you do not own a WebCheck machine, have the WebCheck facility enter your address into this field.  Do not enter the Department of Public Safety in the ‘mail to’ field.

This coupon (HLS 0020 Word / PDF) should be completed and taken to the WebCheck provider to ensure proper delivery of future results.

While this is the preferred method for a background check, not everyone is able to submit their prints via WebCheck.  If you are eligible for an exception to WebCheck, we may accept paper results.

To locate a WebCheck facility, log onto the Attorney General's Web site (www.ag.state.oh.us).  Please contact the location directly to determine which criminal record checks are available at that location and when a check can be completed.

Our fax number has changed.  As of 5/11/09, our new fax number is (614) 466-0342.  Forms and letters are in the process of being updated; please watch for these changes so that you can print forms with the correct information.

Online Rosters and Registration Renewals:  Providers may request access to their rosters and online renewal by completing the Online Access Application (HLS 0118  Word / PDF) and submitting it to the PI/SG Unit by fax at (614) 466-0342 or e-mail to PISGLR@dps.state.oh.us.

FBI Background Checks: Applications requesting a new firearms bearer (FAB) notation are required to have a FBI criminal records check in addition to the BCI&I criminal records check. BCI&I accepts FBI fingerprint cards for PI/SG FAB applications. FBI fingerprint cards can be ordered through BCI&I. Please remember that fees for both criminal records checks must be sent directly to BCI&I.
